5 Steps to Make Social Media Time Income-Producing Time

–Guest Post by Jennifer Fong

You’ve heard the phrase that “time is money.” Well in direct selling, that is certainly true!  The time you spend on your business can mean money in your pocket, as long as you focus on income-producing activities.

So is spending your time on social media a good investment?  What does it do for the bottom line of your business?

The answer is, it depends.  If you don’t know what you want social media to do for your business, then you’re wasting your time online. It’s not enough to log on, hang out with friends, and maybe throw in a little Farmville.  That is neither strategic, nor something you can measure.

Instead, use this simple process to ensure that the time you invest results in income for your business:

  1. Decide your goal for social media. Is it to increase sales? Find new recruits? Support your team? Whatever it is, start with one goal.
  2. Decide how much time you can invest. Start with 20 minutes a day, and schedule it in your calendar.
  3. Decide what you can do online that will help you reach your goal.  Will you build relationships with customers in order to create reorders?  Then comment on their statuses and invite them to join a customer group on Facebook. Will you be looking for new recruits? Then do a search on keywords such as “need money” and “out of work,” and then strategically connect and build relationships with people.  Whatever your goal, write down specific activities that you can do online to help meet that goal.
  4. Set a timer, and work on the activities you’ve listed during your scheduled social media time.  When the timer goes off, you’re done!
  5. Measure your results. Every month or so, do a quick check on the results of your online activities.  Are they bringing you any results? Can you point to places that are working, or that need improvement? Make the necessary adjustments in order to make your social media time as productive as possible.

Social media time can be income producing time when used strategically.  But be very sure you know WHY you are doing what you are doing, and stay on top of the results it brings, in order to make the most of social media marketing.
